Program Overview
The Novartis Malaria Initiative, launched in 2002 in the Philippines, is part of a global effort by Novartis Healthcare and the World Health Organization (WHO) to combat malaria in developing countries. The initiative provides access to Coartem® (a combination of artemether and lumefantrine), a breakthrough anti-malaria drug, at cost through public health systems.

The program began in 2001 as a 10-year alliance between Novartis and WHO to distribute affordable anti-malaria treatments to malaria-endemic countries. Over the years, it has grown into one of the most extensive and successful access-to-medicines programs worldwide, providing over 400 million treatments in more than 60 malaria-endemic countries globally. It is estimated that this effort has saved 1 million lives, most of them infants and children.

Since its local launch in 2002, the Novartis Malaria Initiative has distributed 172,260 treatments to Filipino patients at cost, saving an estimated 43,000 lives. This effort aligns with the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Target No. 8, which seeks to improve access to essential medicines for neglected tropical diseases in developing nations.
