Program Description
Since its inception in 2000, Novartis Healthcare Philippines, Inc., in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), has been at the forefront of global leprosy control. The program has provided nearly 100% of the world’s supply of multidrug therapy (MDT) for leprosy at no cost, equivalent to a donation valued at approximately $77 million. This initiative has contributed to curing around 5 million leprosy patients globally.
In the Philippines, Novartis has supplied over 47,000 MDT courses, accounting for more than 60% of WHO’s total MDT supply to the country since 1995.
MDT: A Breakthrough Treatment
Recommended by WHO since 1981, MDT has transformed the treatment of leprosy. The therapy involves three essential drugs:
- Dapsone
- Rifampicin
- Clofazimine
This combination therapy:
- Cures patients.
- Interrupts leprosy transmission.
- Prevents disabilities.
Patients, even those with the most severe forms of the disease, show significant clinical improvement within weeks of starting MDT. Two of these critical drugs, rifampicin and clofazimine, were developed in Novartis research laboratories.
In October 2010, Novartis and WHO announced an extension of their collaboration to provide free MDT medicines until 2015. During this five-year commitment, the program aimed to treat an estimated 1.1 million leprosy patients worldwide. Novartis also committed an additional $2.5 million to support WHO’s logistical and operational costs.
