The proper use of condoms is one of the keys to preventing Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) such as HIV/AIDS and gonorrhea. When used correctly, condoms are also highly effective in preventing pregnancy. To maximize the benefits of condom use, it is important to follow proper procedures. Here are the steps:
- Purchase a condom from a pharmacy or any store. Make sure the condom is not expired (check the “Expiration Date” on the back of the package).
- Store the condom properly in a cool, dry place.
- When ready to use the condom, open it carefully. The effectiveness of preventing pregnancy depends on the condom being intact; even a small tear can allow semen to travel to a woman’s fallopian tubes or serve as a pathway for infections. Be cautious when opening the package—do not use your teeth.
- Roll the condom gently onto an erect penis. Ensure the tip of the condom has a small space to collect semen in case of ejaculation. The condom should unroll from the head of the penis to its base.
- Keep the condom on during penetration, whether vaginal, anal, or oral. While anal or oral penetration does not cause pregnancy, it helps protect against STDs like HIV. Although the risk of infection from oral sex is lower, using a condom is still recommended for safety.
- If using a lubricant, only use water-based lubricants. Avoid oil-based lubricants as they can weaken the condom and cause it to break.
- If the condom breaks, stop intercourse immediately and replace it with a new condom before resuming.
- After ejaculation, withdraw the penis carefully, ensuring the condom does not slip off. Hold the open end of the condom at the base of the penis to prevent it from slipping.
- Roll the condom off the penis without allowing it or the penis to come into contact with the partner’s genital area.
- Dispose of the condom in a trash bin. Do not reuse a condom.
Using a condom serves as both a barrier against pregnancy and a protection against STDs. However, possessing a condom should not be viewed as permission or a license to engage in casual or indiscriminate sexual activity. Practice responsibility and integrity in your sexual life, guided by your beliefs and values.
